Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften 2019

Save the date: The ELEMONSTERS live – at the Long Night of Science in Berlin on June 15th! In the Institute of Chemistry of the Technical University Berlin (building C, Strasse des 17. Juni 115) at 5pm there will be a science-show with many exciting experiments, a live Elemonster and many suprises. Niobium was named after Niobe the daughter of Tantalos, who is namesake of tantalum – the element right below niobium in the periodic table. It is commonly used as an addition to stainless steel alloys.

The name zirconium is taken from the mineral zircon (ZrSiO4). The word is derived from the persischen wort zargun for „gold-like“. It is used for example in nuclear power plants as a casing for the fuel rods, or to produce bright sparks in flashbulbs and fireworks.
